Chapter Fourteen

The speckled bowling ball teetered into the gutter despite Robyn’s grimaces, twists and kicks, and she slogged dejectedly back to her seat. “Whose bright idea was this?”

Julia nodded in the direction of Teddie, whose somber mood on her birthday reminded all of them it had been only a week since Jordan’s death. They all had stood by her through the funeral, and took it as a good sign that she still wanted to have a bowling party, though no longer with forty of her closest friends. Today was just for their usual gang, which now firmly included Ashley, along with Patsy, and Julia’s mom, Bonnie.

“Did you really go out and buy those?” Elaine asked, gesturing toward Ashley’s brand-new burgundy suede bowling shoes.

“Do you even have to ask? Not only did I buy them, I also paid for overnight shipping so they’d get here in time. Laugh at me tomorrow when the skin starts peeling off your toes.” She got up and took her turn, drawing the eyes of several bowlers on nearby lanes. A few flashes from camera phones suggested a new picture would soon be shared with the news team at TV4.

“You might have to get your own shoes too, Robyn,” Julia said. “Ashley’s kicking your ass.”

“Beginner’s luck.”

They had taken two lanes side by side with an automatic scorekeeper that broadcast their collective ineptitude to everyone in the building. Only Bonnie seemed to have a clue about what she was doing, but their general lack of bowling prowess wasn’t getting in the way of their fun. The whole day was about camaraderie and support for Teddie.

As Elaine took her place on the lane, Ashley slid into the seat next to Julia and whispered, “Is it my imagination, or is there something cooking between Teddie and Patsy?”

The pair had been practically inseparable, with Teddie gallantly responding to Patsy’s every need, from hanging up her jacket to fetching drinks. They looked comfortable together, and Julia nearly laughed aloud to think she had once entertained the thought of asking Patsy out.

“Teddie’s been interested in her for a while but didn’t want to start anything while Patsy was still taking care of Jordan. She got the big lecture from Mom this morning about not jumping into anything, and she promised they were going to take it slow.”

“This is a whole different side of Teddie, like she’s grown up all of a sudden.”

“I hope so. What I like best about Patsy is that she hates motorcycles. We’ll know it’s serious when Teddie gets rid of that Harley.”

“You’re up, Jules.”

Julia hopped to her feet and found herself standing beside her mother in the next lane. In perfect synchrony they marched four steps and rolled their respective balls down the alley, both striking off-center to leave several pins standing.

As they waited for their balls to return, her mother turned her back to the group and lowered her voice. “I like her.”

“You mean Patsy?”

“No, I mean Ashley. Teddie said she thought you two had a thing going on.
